After the disappointment at Rockingham were Kelly had broken a crank
shaft and somehow managed to finish the race, the team were apprehensive
about going to Thruxton as this is the fastest track in Britain. In
qualifying the new engine proved to be up to scratch, with Kelly
finishing on the front row with an average lap speed of 95mph. Bob was
finding it difficult to come to terms with some of Thruxton's 115mph +
corners but managed to qualify in 17th place.
The race started and Kelly slotted into 2nd place ready to take
advantage of the vital slip stream of Thruxton's long straights. Kelly
soon found himself heading the twenty car pack, while Robert was holding
good progress in the thick of the action. Kelly came under heavy
pressure later in the race from one of his championship rivals and
whilst this was highly entertaining for the crowd it allowed Peter
Baldwin to open up a two second lead. Kelly set out to catch the leader
and set the fastest lap of the race when the red flags came out so had
to settle for second place with Robert finishing in 11th place and
claiming the Spax award for the most positions gained.
The team came away heading the points table and looking forward to
playing at home for the next three rounds at Brands Hatch.
