A two day meeting with qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday, Kelly was up-beat as this circuit is one of the most demanding in driver ability. The weather was better than the forecast had predicted as qualifying started, with the normal 15 minute qualifying session a good grid position was a must for this ultra fast circuit. Lap 1 was a warm up tyres and familiarise yourself with the track again, lap 2 and Kelly was now pushing hard, going deep into Church and drifting wide to slingshot him up to club. Exiting Club corner the car went down on power and was only firing clean on 3 cylinders, with the pit entrance only inches away Kelly pulled in for the team to check over the car. The decision was to take the car back to the awning and sort out the problem ready for the race tomorrow, Kelly had only completed 2 laps with the fastest lap time putting him down in 15th position. Once back at the awning the engine was checked over and a valve had got kissed slightly by the piston but it had bent an exhaust valve so the head was changed and everything checked over again. Sunday morning, the Mini Miglia race was set for a race start at about 4pm so the team had many hours to relax and watch some racing. All fired up for a battle to get passed 14 other cars as Kelly rolled up to the back of the grid, the 5 second board was shown as the red lights go on. The drive from the line was impressive as the lights go out, into Campbell and Kelly had pulled past six cars, now lying in 8th position. Cobb, Segrave and Noble sweeping corners saw Kelly push himself upto 4th position, now tagging onto the back of the leading group. Lap 2 and Kelly was tapping on the door of 2nd position, fighting hard trying to force the issue to try and catch Baldwin who had slightly pulled a gap. Lap 3, Kelly had pulled into 2nd position and was trying to pull back the gap that the leader had made, lap four and Kelly felt a slight loss of power as Sollis dragged passed him coming out of Village. Kelly's engine slowed and sounded flat as the rest of the field rushed past as Kelly coasted in. Once back in the pits the team discovered a broken plug was the culprit for Kelly's retirement, the race was finally won by Peter Baldwin, 2nd Bill Sollis and Max Hunter 3rd. |
